Greek Easter

For many of us Lent just started, that is if you follow the Julian calendar of course! A little more than a month away until we celebrate His Resurrection. Whether you follow a strict fasting diet or opt to leave something out, you are doing so for about 46 days. For Orthodox Christians the Great Lent is more strict, and the faithful are expected to abstain for all days from meat, meat by-products, poultry, eggs, and dairy products. In any case, as we near celebrations and festivities we have feasts of goodness on the mind.

Dining with the Gods...

Easter in Greece is celebrated with far more importance than any other holiday. What better way to do so than with food, and boy is it something to look forward to. Especially if you have been fasting for the last 40 or so days. From the spit-roast lamb to chicken skewers to the red eggs , Tsoureki and more. Every table may have different sides depending on what their family custom, but all tables will have the lamb, the magiritsa (not my fave), the Tsoureki , the red dyed eggs and the koulourakia.
